Geosynthetics, a term covering geotextile, geogrids, geomembranes and geocomposites, are described, and an outline is given of methods of design with these materials. Designs involving filtration (cross-plane fabric flow) and drainage (in-plane fabric flow) are presented. Examples are given of geotextile design behind a gabion wall, design beneath rock rip-rap (filtration designs) and of design of a seepage cutoff and a geotextile collector behind a retaining wall (drainage designs).
