To assess the effect of applying early tracheotomy in patients who received prolonged mechanical ventilation but not because of pulmonary diseases,we investigated 158 patients who received prolonged mechanical ventilation after admission retrospectively. All the patients were divided into two groups, early tracheotomy group(n=88) and delayed tracheotomy group(n=70) who underwent tracheotomy after 7 days respectively. We compared amount of sedation, analgesic agent and antibiotic, the mortality, incidence of hospital acquired pneumonia, duration of mechanical ventilation and hospitalization in ICU of the two groups.Early tracheotomy in patients who received prolonged mechanical ventilation could reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and hospitalization in ICU,and reduce the amount of antibiotic and analgesic agent. Therefore, early tracheotomy was beneficial to the patients who received prolonged mechanical ventilation not because of pulmonary diseases.
