摘要
In this article the evolution of Library of Congress subject headings concerning women from LCSH 8 (1975) through LCSH 14 (1991) is traced. Dramatic changes have taken place, including an explosion of occupational headings for women, the disappearance of sexist headings and croos-references, and a shift from a somewhat narrow and condescending view of women to a more balanced view that takes into account the variety of roles they play. However, subtler forms of gender bias remain in the headings and in the ways they are applied. The author enumerates these problem areas and suggests possible solutions, concluding with a discussion of the large issues involved in attempts to root out bias in the catalog
