The Revision of the Translated Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire

Body-related images have become a growing interest for the majority of people in our society in the last two decades. To date, few studies have been conducted by employing the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) as the main research instrument to detect the phenomenon of body image in Taiwan. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the psychometric properties of the translated MBSRQ, which included 7 attitudinal subscales and 3 additional multi-item subscales; these subscales were the Appearance Evaluation, Appearance Orientation, Fitness Evaluation, Fitness Orientation, Health Evaluation, Health Orientation, Illness Orientation, Body Areas Satisfaction Scale, Overweight Preoccupation Scale, and Self-Classified Weight Scale. The four-page questionnaire contained four major sections with a total of 69 questions and was administered to 296 students (159 males and 137 females) of National ChungHsing University and Providence University in Taichung. Participants had a mean age of 20.4 years old (SD=1.3). Consistent with past studies, findings revealed that scores from the translated MBSRQ were normally distributed, internally consistent, and demonstrated construct validity. The correlational analyses indicated that the 10 MBSRQ factors were modestly or moderately correlated. Directions for future research in this area were described.
