Reciprocal borrowing: origins and outcomes

Reciprocal borrowing by users of university and college libraries is traced back to experiments in WA in the mid 1970s. That particular scene is analysed in detail, and the present situation around Australia is also surveyed. The arguments for and against reciprocal borrowing are explored, and the need for more data to enable better decision-making is stressed.
