The carbon membrane from Tongting coal residue was prepared by steam activation.The effects of the amount of the steam added,activation temperature,and activation time on the porosity of carbon membrane were investigated.The results showed that the pores of carbon membrane were mainly micropore and mesopore.The optimum conditions which promoted the increase of porosity were steam 1.41 mL/min,the activation temperature 800 ℃,and the activation time of 105 min.Under these conditions,the porosity of carbon membrane obtained was 35.8%.Therefore the adjustment of carbon membrane porosity by steam activation was feasible.
