AIM:To evaluate the effects of bisoprolol and metoprolol in the treatment of chronic congestive heart failure.METHODS:Two hundred and thirty-three patients with chronic congestive heart failure patients were randomized into bisoprolol group and metoprolol group.Patients were treated with bisoprolol 2.5-10mg.d~(-1)or metoprolol 25-100mg.d~(-1)orally in bisoprolol group(116 patients)and metoprolol group (117 patients)for 2 years, respectively.RESULTS:The total effective rate of bisoprolol group was 72.4% and total effective rate of metoprolol group was 70.1%.There was significant difference of heart function before and after treatment(P0.01).Left ventricular systolic function by echocardiogram improved remarkably in both groups(P0.01).The total mortality, cardiovascular mortality and cardiovascular disease hospital admission were no difference between 2 groups.CONCLUSION:Both bisoprolol and metoprolol are beneficial for the treatment of chronic congestive heart failure.
