Carbon catabolite repression (CCR) has been studied extensively in both Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. CCR involves the phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotrasferase system (PTS), which is essential for transporting and phosphorylating variety of sugars. PTS affects gene expression indirectly by regulating the activity of cyclic AMP (cAMP) biosynthetic enzyme adenylate cyclase in E. coli. In contrast, B. subtilis cAMP is synthesized only under special physiological conditions. Here we compare the working model between B. subtilis CCR and E. coli.
