Physical vapour deposition (PVD) in combination with conventional coating processes such as hot-dip coating or electrolytic deposition offers interesting development approaches for novel steel strip coating systems. In joint-research projects of several German and Austrian steel companies with the Fraunhofer-Institute for Electron-beam and Plasma technology (FEP) different promising approaches for new PVD-coated steel sheet products, in particular in combination with conventional coating processes have been investigated. For an industrial application challenges particularly remain in terms of process development, i.e. to integrate PVD coating-processes into conventional steel strip coating lines.
