The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C 18 H 15 NO 2 , contains two crystallographically independent molecules with similar conformations. Each molecule consists of a carbazole ring system and a fused substituted benzene ring. The molecules are highly planar and their conformations are similar to that of ellipticine [Courseille, Busetta & Hospital (1974). Acta Cryst. B30, 2628-2631], which is a DNA-intercalating molecule
