Fertility and population policy

China, the most populous nation in the world, reported a population of 1.27 billion in the year 2000. Compared with the population of the United States, 280 million, China had 1 billion more people at the turn of the new millennium. Given 6 billion people over the whole world, Chinese represented a little more than one-fifth of the human race on earth.
