Objective To observe the protective effect of procyanidins on the rat cortex following traumatic brain injury. Methods Ninety Sprague-Dawley rats were put into experiment and were divided into five groups with 12 rats each.Traumatic brain injury has been developed through Feeney's method. PC was given intraperitoneal (i.p.) after being injuried for 5 minutes and then used for measuring the activities of content of water in brain tissue, the content of MDA and SOD in rat brain cortex after 2 hours following TBI. The ultrastructure in brain cortex was also been examined. Results The activities of SOD reduced in rat brain cortex after the traumatic brain injury, but content of MDA and water of brain tissue rose. PC can partly reverse these changes and reduce the brain edema. The effect of melatonin was also confirmed histopathologically. Conclusions Procyanidins may play a neuroprotect role in decreasing the activity of antioxidant ability and potent scavengers of free radicals.
