Memantine:a new drug for Alzheimer's disease

Memantine,the first and only representative of a new class of Alzheimer drug-a mod- erate affinity NMDA-receptor antagonist,was approved for treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease in Europe and US.Memantine appears to protect the brain's nerve cells against glutamate,a mes- senger chemical released in excess amounts by cells damaged by Alzheimer's disease or certain other neu- rological disorders.Clinically,monotherapy or combination of memantine with donepezil shows significant improvements of cognition and action abilities in patients with moderate or severe AD.AD patients are evident to get huge benefits in the treatment of memantine.
