Investigation on Present Situation and Strategies of Medical Waste Disposal in a Hospital

[Objective]To explore the disposal measures on medical waste by investigating the medical waste disposal conditions in a certain hospital.[Methods]The conditions of medical waste from generation to final disposal,the management process of medical waste,and the perception of the related staff on medical waste disposal in a upper second class hospital were investigated in 2008 from January to June by means of referring to the records of medical waste disposal and questionnaires.[Results]The weight of the general generated waste is 210 000 kg,while the medical waste is 115 058 kg,which is about 35.40 percent of the hospital waste.The percentage of infectious waste,pathological waste,recycling disposable plastics and transfusion bottles in the medical waste is 11.24,0.26,4.46 and 84.04,respectively,and 88.50 percent of the medical waste is recycled by waste disposal factories.The related staff have less perception on destructively thorough disposal by incinerate,while they have more perception on recycling and salvage by sterilization under high pressure(10% versus 77.78%).[Conclusion]There is still no effective approach to some medical waste,and people have little perception on thorough disposal of medical waste which endanger people's health.
