Critical Review of Corrosion Test Methods for Duplex Stainless Steels

Abstract Despite the increasingly widespread use of duplex stainless steels in oil and gas production systems there are no fully standardised methods for their corrosion testing. Existing test methods, which are based on techniques derived for other materials, particularly austenitic alloys, are reviewed. Drawbacks and limitations of existing tests applied to duplex grades are outlined. The current testing philosophy adopted by a number of U K operating companies is described and suggestions are made for possible future development.
