Effects of solid solution treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-10Sr-5Y master alloys were studied. The results indicate that solid solution treatment can modify the microstructure and improve mechanical properties of Mg-10Sr-5Y alloys. The intermetallic compounds, such as Mg 17 Sr 2 and Mg 24 Y 5 distrubited along the grain boundary, dissolve into matrix α-Mg gradually. The structure distrubites more uniformly with the solid solution temperature increasing.A little undisolved Mg 17 Sr 2 and Mg 24 Y 5 eutectic compounds distrubite on the grain boundary after solid solution treatment. When the temperature of solid solution is lower than 480℃,the hardness decreases slightly with increasing solution treatment temperature. When the temperature is more than 480℃,the hardness decreases sharply and then increases with temperature increasing, the minimum hardness is obtained at 500℃.The effect of holding time on the hardness of Mg-10Sr-5Y alloys is very little.
