Abstract ZRANB2 is an SR‐like pre‐mRNA splicing factor that is conserved across vertebrates. It contains two RNA‐binding zinc finger domains at the N‐terminus, each of which includes a tetrahedrally coordinated zinc ion which is essential for the 3D fold of the domain, and an arginine/serine‐rich (RS) domain near the C‐terminus. The 3D structures of each zinc finger domain have been solved by NMR spectroscopy, and a crystal structure of the second zinc finger in complex with RNA is also available. Similar zinc finger domains, known collectively as RanBP2‐type zinc fingers, have been observed in other proteins and display a range of substrate‐binding abilities.
