摘要
This hands-on laboratory experiment was developed to enhance undergraduate students’ understanding of fundamental chemistry concepts through the real-world context of hair bleaching. Hair coloring is a widespread and increasingly popular practice that often requires an initial bleaching step to achieve the desired color, providing a familiar context for learning chemistry. In this experiment, students explored hair structure and the types of melanin pigments, and they reviewed oxidation reactions. They investigated how bleaching reagents such as hydrogen peroxide and persulfates generate radicals to degrade hair pigments. The laboratory experiment also emphasized safety by discussing the health risks associated with hair-bleaching chemicals. Students worked with natural human hair swatches, commercial hair developers, and bleaching products, following professional salon protocols to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. The activity reinforced students’ conceptual understanding and improved their critical thinking and chemical safety awareness. It also enhanced their ability to make informed decisions about chemical use in everyday life. Overall, these results highlight the importance of incorporating hands-on, context-based activities into undergraduate curricula to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, making chemistry education more relevant to everyday life.
