Sowing the seeds of dissolution Trace amounts of copper fluoride allow direct dissolution of lithium nitrate in an ethylene carbonate/diethyl carbonate electrolyte mixture. In their Communication on page 14055 ff., J.-Q. Huang et al. bypass the low solubility of lithium nitrate––a common protective additive in ether electrolytes used in lithium metal batteries. A working high-voltage lithium metal battery retained high capacity and Coulombic efficiency after 300 cycles.
