On the front line

Work, Employment and Society is inviting contributions to a new section of the journal entitled 'On the Front Line'. Submissions should ordinarily consist of first person narratives to a maximum of 4000 words and include a short explanation that situates the narrative in its most appropriate contexts, whether organizational, sectoral or geographical, and briefly indicates how it engages with relevant sociological debates or developments. Submissions will be reviewed in the same way as articles in the Research Notes section of the journal. The purpose of the new section is to let the subjects speak for themselves, to enable workers' voices to convey sociological insight into the realities of work and employment. In introducing this new section, we wish to invoke the ethnographic research tradition within the sociology of work and employment. This tradition has involved the primary material of academic researchers, first-hand accounts marshalled by journalists and autobiographical testimonies of workers themselves, which have had a huge influence on sociological thinking in the field.
