OBJECTIVE: Sepsis is an organ dysfunction syndrome caused by an abnormal host immune response because of infection. Pyroptosis is a newly discovered programmed cell death relies on caspase-1, caspase-11, caspase-4, caspase-5 and is characterized by the release of inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-18. The exploration of the molecular mechanisms of pyroptosis and the correlation between pyroptosis and sepsis can provide new ideas and new targets for the treatment of sepsis.
