Revisiting the typification of Laurus cinnamomum (Lauraceae), the basionym for the name of True Cinnamon or Ceylon Cinnamon

Abstract Cinnamomum verum , the replacement name for Laurus cinnamomum described by Linnaeus, is applied to a species native to Sri Lanka. It is commonly known as Ceylon Cinnamon and is of high economic value. Kostermans in 1982 and 1985 attempted to typify L. cinnamomum , but his typifications were not effective. Later, Soh in 2011 effectively lectotypified the name based on a sterile specimen at Herb. Clifford at BM. We epitypify L. cinnamomum with a specimen bearing flowers and fruits deposited at E for precise application of the name because the ribbed perianth tube with indurate persistent tepals subtending the fruits are the characteristic features of the species C. verum .
