Abstract Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace, automotive and medical implants. In recent years, laser processing has attracted attention as a method to modify the surface properties of these alloys to improve their mechanical, chemical and biological properties. In this study, we present experimental data on the structure, chemical composition and morphology of titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4 V after laser processing. The Fiber Lasers IPG YLM-QCW-100 was used. The material was studied in order to better understand the nature of laser melting and laser-assisted ablation of the surface layer. Melting and subsequent rapid solidification form a new modified microstructure of the Ti–6Al–4 V surface layer. This rapid solidification of the surface layer affects the new microstructure as well as the topography of its surface.
