摘要
Biomaterials are natural or synthetic substances that are designed to interact with biological systems of the human body to replace or support them, permanently or temporarily. The main objective of implantable devices made of biodegradable/bioresorbable biomaterials is to mimic or support an organ or tissue to sustain its functions during the healing process or as long as needed. During the past several years, biomaterials have been successfully used in the healthcare industry. Biodegradable/bioabsorbable polymers take part undeniably in a wide range of medicine because of their extraordinary characteristic features. Specifically, the utilization of biodegradable polymers dates back many years. After emerging of biodegradable/bioresorbable polymers, medicine has flourished dramatically when compared with the only presence of temporary biomaterials. Biodegradable polymeric materials are employed as sutures, tissue engineering scaffolds, orthopedic implants, or in drug delivery systems. This chapter focuses on the classification of biodegradable/bioresorbable polymeric materials and their attributions, degradation details, application in medicine, and their immense impact on recent medical studies.
