Abstract This chapter introduces a note of ambivalence, interrogating the charge that the United States is guilty of hypocrisy in the Middle East—of saying one thing but doing another. Yes, the United States, under both Republican and Democratic administrations, has been guilty of this. But is the alternative to hypocrisy any better?
