Pragmatics: The study of meaning in context

Pragmatics (from Greek pragma = action ) is the newcomer among the major branches of linguistics. Its precise definition and status within linguistic theory are, to some extent, still subject to debate: Is it a linguistic subdiscipline like, for example, phonology, morphology and syntax, or is it a broad, interdisciplinary approach which is concerned with all kinds of linguistic structures?
