Objective To investigate the formation of cyanuric acid and repair from kidney damage. Method GC-MS was conducted to analyze the concentration of melamine that was converted to cyanuric acid under simulate gastric condition. Melamine was mixed in the diet and administered at 25 mg / kg body weight to the exposure group. The rats were individually subjected to morphological observation after two, three, and five weeks of exposure, and two, six, and twelve weeks of recovery after exposure. Results Melamine can be converted to cyanuric acid under simulated gastric conditions. Renal tubules were obstructed by melamine-cyanuric acid crystals, but this condition can be gradually restored without further treatment after exposure to melamine was terminated. Conclusion The decomposition of melamine to cyanuric acid under gastric acid conditions is one of the mechanisms leading to kidney injury. Nevertheless, kidney damage can be gradually repaired without treatment.
