Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the greatest component of total energy expenditure and changes in RMR may have a significant impact on body composition. RMR is highly correlated with fat free mass (FFM), therefore, increases in FFM may influence RMR (Pratley, J. Appl. Physiol, 1994). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a supervised long-term resistance training (RT) program on RMR and body composition (BC) in moderately obese females. Eleven females (25-35% BF) age 19-35 participated in a 24wk, 3 d/wk progressive RT program (70-80% 1RM). Estimations of body composition and RMR were performed using UWW at RV and indirect calorimetry via a ventilated hood, respectively. Energy intake was attained from 3d food records. Table Strength was the only variable exhibiting a significant increase. FFM and RMR were unchanged subsequent to 24 wks of RT. A small increase in energy intake was observed and may explain the lack of change in BC and RMR. These data suggest 24wks of moderately intense RT may not be sufficient to increase FFM and RMR in moderately obese female populations.
