Revolutionary cells [fuel cells]

Invented in the 19th century, fuel cells are on the verge of commercialisation. The author describes the technology and benefits of fuel cells which could revolutionise power generation and automation in the 21st century. Prototype fuel cells and their operating principles are outlined. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and direct methanol fuel cells using a PEM are described.
