Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of interventional ultrasound guided percutaneous catheter drainage in the treatment of liver abscess. Methods Forty-one patients of liver abscess confirmed by clinical characteristic, imaging(B ultrasound or CT)and bacterial culture were involved. All patients underwent ultrasound guided percutaneous catheter drainage.9 patients had the abscess on the left lobe of the liver,24 patients had the abscess on the right lobe of the liver, and 8 patients had the abscesses on the both lobe of the liver. The abscesses were single in 31 patients, and were mutiple in 10 patients. Results Forty-one patients were cured with simple drainage and irrigation, the average duration of drainage catheter was(18.5±5.3)d.Only 5 patients underwent second percutaneous catheter drainage. No relapse occurred during 6 months' follow-up.Liquor puris leaking happened in 2 patients and cured by right subphrenic ultrasound guided percutaneous catheter drainage. No significant complication was found in other patients. Conclusion Interventional ultrasound guided percutaneous catheter drainage is an efficient and safe treatment of liver abscess.
