During the process of segmental-baffle design, the effects of segmental-baffle spacing or baffle cut is usually considered separately, while their correlation is often ignored. The effects of baffle spacing and baffle cut on the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop in the shell side was studied by adopting the simplified Bell-Delaware method. It was found that the effects of baffle spacing and baffle cut on the pressure drop are much more significant than that of the heat transfer coefficient in the shell side. The optimization equation of baffle spacing and baffle cut is derived based on the hypothetical condition that the cross-flow area of the gap of segmental-baffle and tube bounds is equal. The corresponding solutions of baffle spacing and baffle cut of different shell diameters, tube diameters and number of tube side pass are calculated.By examining the solutions,it was found that the ratio between baffle spacing and shell diameter is appropriate between 0.3~0.6 when baffle cut is 0.2~0.35.
