This work aimed at evaluating the quality of wood and charcoal of Miconia cinnamomifolia, used for charcoal production on family farms; comparing its quality with the wood and charcoal of some Eucalyptus and other species used for this purpose. Were collected four trees of M. cinnamomifolia (Jacatirão-açu) in the town of Três Riachos, in the municipality of Biguaçu in Santa Catarina. In the wood we determined: moisture content, basic density, calorific value, fixed carbon content, volatiles and ash. Specimens of 2 cm × 2 cm × 2 cm were carbonized and charcoal was evaluated for gravimetric and volumetric yield; moisture content; bulk density; calorific value and immediate analysis. The results showed that the wood M. cinnamomifolia has a basic density of 552 kg/m 3, similar to other species, as some Eucalyptus, used for the production of charcoal. The physical properties of the wood indicate the suitability of the species for energy and charcoal production. As to the charcoal, the bulk density (290 kg/m3) can be considered low when compared to charcoal of some species of Eucalyptus, and other commercial charcoal of various origins. The moisture content (5.52%) and ash content (1.35%) were low, and the gravimetric yield (36%) was high, higher than some Eucalyptus, Mimosa scabrella and Melia azedarach. With respect to the energetic properties, charcoal had lower calorific value (6267 kcal/kg) and lower fixed carbon content (68.18%) compared to charcoal from other native species, Eucalyptus and some other commercial charcoals.
