Synthesis of Adipic Acid Starting from Renewable Raw Materials

Rennovia has developed a process for the production of adipic acid from glucose. The process involves two catalytic process steps: (i) oxidation of glucose to glucaric acid and (ii) hydrodeoxygenation of glucaric acid to adipic acid. Stable, long-term operation has been demonstrated for both catalytic processes. Economic models indicate production costs for bio-based adipic acid are significantly below those of the conventional petroleum-based product.
