A method, independent of cathode theory, is developed for determining the region producing ions that reach the cathode sheath. The method does not indicate the exact spot of ion appearance but it is capable of determining the mean ion track reaching the cathcde. The mean length is computed as the mean linear track of all ions appearing in discharge and reaching the cathode. The results achieved with argon at 5 mm mercury are presented. The mean length S/sub k/= 0.08 cm. (R.V.J.)
