What sort of Education? What sort of Culture?

The educational system trains people in skills they need to participate at various levels in the ideological structuring of the society; it teaches them the ideas, the vocabularies, images, beliefs; it trains them to recognise and approve ideological sources. The &s;front-end&s; model of education, where people learn and store up large chunks of knowledge in compulsory schooling from 5 to 16 years, is at variance with authors&s; concept that the fragmentation of women&s;s lives can and should be used as a positive educational model for women and by extension for everyone. The imaginative energy and volume of contemporary women&s;s writing has made feminist ideas and experience more visible and caused a new interest in feminist literary criticism.
