Aim or purpose: To explore the competency characteristics of specialized oral nurses in four-handed operation and to provide a reference for cultivating their four-handed operation skills. Materials and methods: Using purposive sampling, 20 specialized oral nurses engaged in four-handed operation from a tertiary Grade A stomatological hospital in Fuzhou were selected as participants. Based on the Iceberg Model and Onion Model as theoretical frameworks, behavioral event interviews were conducted. Content analysis was employed to analyze and refine the data. Results: The competency characteristics of specialized oral nurses in four-handed operation were summarized into 8 dimensions with 54 specific traits, including professional knowledge, professional skills, professional competence, professional development ability, social skills, professional attitude, personal traits, and personal motivation. Conclusions: The identified 55 competency characteristics can serve as a reference for the selection, training, and assessment of nursing staff.
