Lithium/sulfur dioxide battery design changes

There are special applications for both military and nonmilitary lithium/sulfur dioxide (Li/SO/sub 2/) batteries where the standard design is not suitable. These usually arise because of the need to meet more severe physical conditions. Three examples showing some strenuous military specifications of the US, UK, and Canada are given. Survival radio battery and deep space cell applications are also discussed. Examples of design changes are considered together with the effects on battery performance. Some of these changes are not trivial and require substantial modifications at the cell level.< >
