Summary. A review of the available data shows that in solutions of non‐electrolytes and in heterogeneous systems the coefficient of diffusion of substances is not inversely proportional to the viscosity of the medium. Consequently there is no basis for Bělehradek's theory, based on such a supposed relation, that viscosity of the protoplasm, by determining rate of diffusion, determines the rate of biological reactions.
