The original definition of sarcopenia referred to loss of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) in older adults however, there was no universal definition of muscle strength and the definitions did not specify optimal functional tests. Recently, the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia: 2019 Consensus Update (AWGS 2019) has defined sarcopenia as “loss of muscle mass, plus low muscle strength, and/or low physical performance” and specified cutoffs for each diagnostic component for the general population.
