We had the privilege of studying Rinella et al.'s article in Journal of Hepatology, which detailed the thoughtful transition from the term non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) following an in-depth four-round Delphi survey.1 This shift towards the terminology 'steatotic liver disease (SLD)' underlines the importance of accurately diagnosing hepatic steatosis. While liver biopsy is the gold standard, MRI-estimated proton density fat fraction (PDFF) offers a sensitive non-invasive method for quantifying steatosis.
