This article takes as its point of departure the herding model of Bikhchandani et al. (1992 Bikhchandani, S., Hirshleifer, D. and Welch, I. 1992. A theory of fads, fashion, custom, and cultural change as informational cascades. Journal of Political Economy, 100: 992–1026. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]). We extend earlier experimental evidence to distinguish between informational herding, as in the model, and ownership herding, an alternative explanation for observed behaviour.
