�?���?�??����??�??�?��??�?��?���?����??�??�??�??�?��??�?��?? = The representation of place in the context of root-seeking : a study on Jia Pingwa and Mo Yan

This dissertation, a comparative study on Jia Pingwa and Mo Yan, explores how Jia Pingwa and Mo Yan construct two literary spaces "Shangzhou" and "Gaomi northeast country" through language and literary imagination in the context of root-seeking, with the reliance on the theory of place in humanistic geography and theory of representation.I suggest that Jia Pingwa's representation of Shangzhou with a focus on emotional impression is basically image narrative, whereas Mo Yan' representation of Gaomi northeast country focuses more on senses and is a kind of sensory narrative.The study discusses Jia Pingwa's writings from the perspectives of the representation of Shangzhou landscape and the transition of literary Shangzhou.And, inspired by sensuous geographies, the dissertation analyzes Mo Yan' representation of Gaomi northeast country in the perspectives of vision, hearing, and smell.I argue that the representation of place is production of space under the influence of the authors' living experiences, aesthetic experiences, space experiences.
