Hypochlorous acid(HOCl) having 10~80ppm is a harmless disinfectant which is classified as food additive having a wide range of uses in medicine and food industry. HOCl solution is made by electrolysis of hydrochloric acid and diluted by water after. During the HOCl production process, the flow rate of hydrochloric acid, applied current or voltage and temperature variation by joule heating within electrolytic cell should be controlled appropriately. In this paper, we applied energy balance theory that considers bubble area fraction of the internal structure of the electrolytic cell. A comparison between theoretical and experimental results were compared to find out the key parameters to predict the HOCl production. From our analysis by calculating bubble area fraction, we predicted temperature changes in electrolytic cell and found the electrolysis efficiency which in turn can lead to sterilizing effect of HOCl, which is governed by the pH and concentration of OCl⁻ ions.
