This chapter reviews the syntheses, properties, and reactions of quinazolines. The chapter discusses the physical properties of quinazolines such as, resonance energies; dipole moment; ultraviolet electronic spectra; fluorescence and phosphorescence; photoelectron spectrum; infrared spectrum; magnetic resonance spectrum; optical nuclear polarization; ionization and covalent hydration; and polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The synthesis of quinazolines in which the pyrimidine ring retains its complete aromatic character, and the other three parts are on the synthesis of quinazolines with oxygen, and/or sulfur atoms at the 2-, 4-, and 2,4-positions, is presented. Several reactions of quinazolines and quinazolinones including ring-cleavage reactions, alkylation, addition reactions, and metathesis, are also discussed. The chapter presents the molecular rearrangements and ring transformations involving quinazolines, which include rearrangements without alteration of ring size, rearrangements involving five- and six-membered rings, and transformations involving six- and seven- or more membered rings.
