His technological contributions include the oil immersion lens and the Abbe condenser. Collaboration with glass maker Otto Schott enabled Abbe to develop high quality oil immersion objectives using fluorite and low dispersion glasses developed by Schott Glass. By the turn of the century, Abbe had developed a whole series of excellent, highly corrected objectives and eyepieces. They fully realized the theoretical resolving power possible with the wide field microscope.
