Mannan binding lectin (MBL) is a serum protein of hepatic origin belonging to a family of Ca 2+ dependent collagenous lectins and plays an important role in innate immunity. MBL may act as an opsonin activating complement through binding selectively to mannan rich pathogens and also activates macrophages via recognizing specific cell receptors. It is found that MBL gene mutations may induce low serum concentration and functional defect of MBL. The individuals with MBL deficiency are susceptible to some infections and autoimmune diseases.
