Sensory Mechanisms in Locomotion: The Campaniform Sensilla of the Insect Wing and their Function during Flight

The campaniform sensilla of insects occur associated with cuticle exposed to mechanical strain and stress, such as the cuticle of wings, halteres, antennae, palpi, and legs (Pringle, 1938). Each sensillum consists of a bipolar sensory cell the distal process of which terminates in structurally modified cuticle. The cuticular part is an oval dome-shaped structure, placed as a lid over a hollow tube through the cuticle. The sense cell is located on the inside of the cuticle and its distal process runs through the tube and terminates in the dome.
