A multi-curvature compound eye with negative-meniscus substrate is developed to address the problem of the imaging defocus and spherical aberration in plano-convex spherical compound eye. In compound eye design, a negative meniscus substrate is designed to reduce spherical aberrations and the curvature radius of ommatidia at different levels adjusts to accommodate changes in focal length. The designed compound eye includes 37 ommatidia, offering a theoretical field of view spanning 80°, and its entire diameter is. Furthermore, optical evaluation of the imaging of compound eyes was conducted using spot diagrams and Modulation Transfer Function curves. A micro compound eye imaging system was used to detect the imaging of the fabricated compound eyes. The imaging quality of the compound eye was assessed using the root mean square value in the HSV color model. Compared with the plano-convex spherical compound eye, the maximum light intensity of the designed compound eye is increased by 15%. It is expected that the work in this paper will further promote the application of micro compound eye in the fields of integration, imaging and detection.
