Requirements for suitable width of riparian zone and determination methods

Based on the characteristics of riparian zone structures,the main dynamic processes,including hydrological,hydrodynamic,ecological,and solute transport processes,are illustrated.Minimum,maximum,and optimum widths of riparian zones are proposed to meet different functions and conditions.An overview of methods from abroad for quantitative calculation of the width of the riparian zone is presented.Reference values of the width of the riparian zone for river management in the United States and Australia are summarized.Based on this,an overall idea and a method for the determination of the width of the riparian zone for river management in China are proposed.
