Abstract The structure of the phase Ti 5 S 8 (rhombohedral) has been determined. It is based on a close packing of sulfur of the type cchh; the octahedral holes between adjacent cc sulfur layers and between adjacent hh layers are fully occupied by Ti, while the octahedral holes between adjacent ch layers are partly (1/5) occupied by metal atoms. The unit‐cell dimensions of Ti 3 S 4 (rhombohedral) and Ti 4 S 5 (hexagonal or trigonal) are given.
